Mt. Vernon, Virginia

2.20.09 - I’ve wanted to see Mt. Vernon, home of George and Martha Washington, since I was a boy. It’s my destination this morning. It far exceeds my expectations. Not only is the house very interesting in its architecture, décor, and history, but there is much more. There are many restored or re-created buildings that give one an insight into what this might have been like as a working estate. The museum and educational facility on the estate are great technological and aesthetic works. I highly recommend this visit to anyone.

I remember walking past the National Gallery of Art yesterday and thinking it’s something I’d like to see. I head that way, thinking it closes at 6:00 p.m. I make one more stop on the way to another D.C. area landmark – Five Guys Burgers and Fries. This chain, started in Alexandria, VA, makes some of the best burgers and fries anywhere. The food here is not on my regular diet, but I treat myself to a meal at this “historic” place. I arrive at the National Gallery of Art about 4:50 p.m. to find out they close at 5:00 p.m. I take a fast look around for ten minutes before it closes and see enough to determine that I must come back tomorrow.
